Celebrating a Landmark Case

On Wednesday 15th November 2017 we marked the 35th anniversary of a famous legal ruling, which resulted in women being allowed to purchase drinks at the bar at El Vino for the very first time…

For many years, El Vino had an old-fashioned approach to service at the bar which precluded women from ordering their own drinks. That changed in 1982 when two women, solicitor Tess Gill and journalist Anna Coote, won a lawsuit which overturned the service policy, generating newspaper headlines and national debate.

Today, everybody is welcome at El Vino in equal measure. We held a special event to mark this landmark case, alongside raising funds for The Fawcett Society, the UK’s leading charity campaigning for gender equality and women’s rights.
